किसी पिता के एक या अधिक संतान हों तो वे सब उसके उत्तराधिकारी होते हैं। उसकी धन-दौलत, जायदाद के मालिक होते हैं। उसे बढ़ाते हैं या गॅवाते हैं।

लेकिन धर्म के क्षेत्र में ऐसा कदापि नहीं होता। भगवान बुद्ध से जिन्होंने विपश्यना सीखी और उसे फैलाया, वे सब उनके उत्तराधिकारी बने। उन उत्तराधिकारी शिक्षकों ने औरों को विपश्यना सिखा कर, उसमें प्रवीण करके, उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी बनाया। इस प्रकार पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा के आधार पर इन सभी उत्ताधिकारियों ने धर्म सिखाया। सम्राट अशोक के समय भिक्षु सोण और उत्तर हुए। वे भगवान का धर्म सीख कर उनके उत्तराधिकारी हुए और इसी रूप में धर्म सिखाने के लिए म्यंमा गये। वहां सामान्य लोगों को धर्म सिखाने के  साथ-साथ उन्होंने कुछ ऐसे शिष्य तैयार किये जिन्होंने भगवान के उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में इस गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा को कायम रखा।

भगवान बुद्ध ने कभी अपने पुत्र राहुल को अपना उत्तराधिकारी नहीं बनाया। आगे जाकर गुरु नानकदेवजी ने अपने शिष्य अंगद देव को अपना उत्तराधिकारी बनाया, न कि अपने पुत्र को। धर्म के क्षेत्र में उत्तराधिकारी वही होता है जो अपने गुरु से धर्म सिखाने की विद्या प्राप्त करके उसे सिखाने लगता है। यह गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा पिछले ढाई हजार वर्षों से चलती आ रही है और आगे भी चलती रहेगी।

गुरुदेव सयाजी ऊ बा खिन से मैंने विपश्यना साधना, यानी, शुद्ध धर्म सीखा और उनकी उत्कट अभिलाषा को पूरी करते हुए भारत आकर लोगों को धर्म सिखाने लगा। रंगून रहते हुए 14 वर्षों तक मैं उनके संपर्क में रहा और देखा कि न जाने कितनी बार उन्होंने इन शब्दों का उच्चारण किया होगा, 'भारत से हमें विपश्यना के रूप में अनमोल रत्न मिला। परंतु आज भारत इस रत्न को खोकर कंगाल हो गया है। इसे पुनः भारत ले जाकर हमें भारत का कर्ज चुकाना है। यह कर्ज और कौन चुका पायेगा भला! मैं ही चुकाऊंगा।" उन्हें ही भारत आकर अनमोल कर्ज चुकाना था।

वे स्वयं भारत आकर यहां विपश्यना का पुनर्जागरण करना चाहते थे, परंतु उन दिनों बर्मी नागरिकों को दो कारणों से ही पासपोर्ट दिया जाता था -- या तो वे बर्मा छोड़ कर सदा के लिए चले जायें या उन्हें कहीं बाहर नौकरी मिल रही हो । सयाजी ऊ बा खिन न तो सदा के लिए बर्मा छोड़ना चाहते थे और न ही भारत आने के लिए किसी झूठी नौकरी का सहारा लेना चाहते थे। अतः सरकार ने उन्हें पासपोर्ट नहीं दिया और वे भारत नहीं आ सके। परंतु एक अत्यंत विशिष्ट कारण से सौभाग्यवश मुझे बर्मा का पासपोर्ट मिला। मेरी माता बम्बई (मुंबई) में मानसिक रूप से अस्वस्थ हो गई थी और मैं जानता था कि यदि वह विपश्यना कर लेगी तो स्वस्थ हो जायगी। बर्मी केबिनेट में मेरे दो घनिष्ठ मित्र थे। उन्होंने मेरा पुरजोर समर्थन किया और इस विशेष कारण से मुझे पासपोर्ट मिल गया।

गुरुदेव इस घटना से बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने कहा कि यद्यपि मैं स्वयं भारत का कर्जा नहीं चुका सकता, परंतु अब यह काम मेरी ओर से तुम्हें करना होगा। उनसे विपश्यना विद्या में पारंगत होकर मैं भारत आया और गुरुदेव के इस उद्देश्य की पूर्ति में लग गया। अतः धर्म के क्षेत्र में गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा के अनुसार मैं गुरुदेव सयाजी ऊ बा खिन का उत्तराधिकारी हुआ । मैंने भारत में अनेकों को विपश्यना की शिक्षा दी और कुछ को आचार्य पद पर स्थापित किया। जो आचार्यपद पर स्थापित हुए वे विपश्यना सिखाते हुए मेरे उत्तराधिकारी हुए। यों गुरुदेव के सपनों को साकार होते देख कर मेरे मन का बोझ हल्का हुआ। बर्मा पर भारत का जो कर्जा था, उसे चुकाने का काम आरंभ हुआ।

आगे जाकर विपश्यना के अनेक केंद्र बने और शनैः शनैः भारत में ही नहीं, बल्कि विश्व के अनेक देशों में केंद्र बनते गये। जहां-जहां ये केंद्र स्थापित हुए, वहां उन सभी केंद्रों में प्रशिक्षण देने वाले आचार्य मेरे उत्तराधिकारी ही हैं। क्योंकि मैंने उन्हें जो विपश्यना सिखायी, उसे वे फैलाने का ही काम कर रहे हैं।

जब दूर-दराज के अनेक स्थानों पर विपश्यना के अनेक केंद्र बन गये और बनते ही जा रहे हैं तब मैंने निश्चय किया कि प्रत्येक स्थानीय केंद्र पर प्रशिक्षक के रूप में एक-एक अलग-अलग उत्तराधिकारी हो, परंतु जहां कहीं आवश्यक हो, वहां उन्हें परामर्श देने के लिए अनेक प्रादेशिक आचार्य भी नियुक्त हों। जहां अनेक प्रादेशिक आचार्य काम कर रहे हों, वहां आवश्यक होने पर एक-एक बड़े क्षेत्र के लिए एक भौगोलिक आचार्य हो। केंद्रीय आचार्य, प्रादेशिक आचार्य तथा भौगोलिक आचार्यों की नियुक्ति होने पर वे सभी मेरे उत्तराधिकारी माने जायेंगे। इनके नाम मैं शीघ्र प्रकाशित करूंगा।

किसी केंद्र का अथवा प्रादेशिक या भौगोलिक क्षेत्र का उत्तराधिकारी हो जाने का अर्थ यह नहीं हुआ कि वह उस-उस केंद्र या क्षेत्र का मालिक हो गया। सभी आचार्य मात्र प्रशिक्षण क्षेत्र के उत्तराधिकारी हैं।

ऐसे ही केंद्र का संचालन करने वाले ट्रस्टियों का भी कोई उत्तराधिकार नहीं होता। किसी केंद्र में कोई मान-सम्मान या पद-प्रतिष्ठा पाने का अधिकार भी नहीं होता। वे सभी धर्मसेवक हैं। और केंद्र की यथावश्यक सेवा करते हैं। जिस किसी व्यक्ति ने धर्मस्थल के लिए जमीन दान दी अथवा किसी ने उस पर कोई इमारत बनवा दी, तब दान दी गयी जमीन पर, अथवा उस पर बनायी गयी इमारत पर, उसकी कोई मल्कियत नहीं हो सकती। मल्कियत धर्म की होती है, दानी की नहीं । उनको अपने-अपने दान का और सेवा का अमूल्य पुण्यलाभ प्राप्त हो जाता है, बस इतना ही।

उदाहरण स्वरूप भगवान बुद्ध के समय अनाथपिडिक ने सोने के सिक्के बिछा कर भगवान को भूमि का दान दिया। उस भूमि पर बहुत-सा धन लगा कर आवासीय आवश्यकताओं की भी पूर्ति की। इतना होने पर भी अनाथपिंडिक धर्म की परंपरा को खूब समझता था कि दान दी गयी भूमि और उस पर बनाई गयी इमारतों पर उसका रंचमात्र भी अधिकार नहीं है। जो दान दे दिया सो दे दिया। बदले में कुछ प्राप्त करने की भावना अत्यंत दोषपूर्ण है। यद्यपि उसने देखा कि वर्षावास के बाद जब भगवान अपने भिक्षुओं के साथ अन्य प्रदेशों में विहार करने चले जाते हैं तब यह विहार बिल्कुल सूना पड़ जाता है। भगवान के प्रवास के समय यहां जो भीड़ लगती, वह अब नहीं आती। उसकी बहुत इच्छा थी कि भगवान की अनुपस्थिति में भी लोगों की भीड़ सतत बनी रहे। इस निमित्त उस भूमि पर वह भगवान का एक मंदिर जैसा स्थान बनाना चाहता था। परंतु बहुत चाहते हुए भी ऐसा नहीं कर सका। क्योंकि जो भूमि दान दे दी, उस पर उसका कोई अधिकार नहीं था। अतः अपनी इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए वह भगवान से प्रार्थना करने गया कि उसे वहां एक मंदिर बनवाने की अनुमति दें। यदि दान दी गयी भूमि पर उसकी मल्कियत होती तो उसे भगवान से अनुमति लेने की क्या आवश्यकता थी? भगवान ने अनुमति नहीं दी। क्योंकि वे नहीं चाहते थे कि धर्म का स्थान पूजन-अर्चन और भीड़-भाड़ आदि के लिए हो। वह तो ध्यान के लिए होता है। अतः भगवान ने बोधिवृक्ष की शाखा मॅगवा कर वहां लगवायी और कहा, 'इसके बढ़ जाने पर लोग इसके नीचे बैठ कर ध्यान करेंगे। इस प्रकार इस धरती का लोगों को सही लाभ मिलेगा।

इसी प्रकार आज भी जमीन का, या उस पर केंद्र बनाने का, दान देने वाले व्यक्ति इस पुरातन परंपरा को खूब समझते रहें कि दिये हुए दान पर उनका रंचमात्र भी अधिकार नहीं हो सकता। धर्म की यह शुद्ध परंपरा कायम रहेगी तभी धर्म की सही अभिवृद्धि होती रहेगी। यहां सदैव पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी धर्म का ही प्रशिक्षण दिया जाता रहेगा। केंद्र के आचार्य समय-समय पर बदलते रहेंगे, परंतु धर्म प्रशिक्षण का कार्य सतत चलता रहेगा।

विपश्यना के अनेक केंद्रों की स्थापना हो जाने पर मेरे मन में कुछ अन्य महत्त्वपूर्ण विचार उठे, जिनका विपश्यना के प्रशिक्षण से कोई संबंध नहीं था। एक महत्त्वपूर्ण विचार तो यह आया कि भगवान बुद्ध की पावन शिक्षा भारत से कैसे पूर्णतया लुप्त हुई ? इसका अनुसंधान हो और भारत तथा विश्व में अब पुनः जाग्रत हुई। इस विद्या की समग्र प्रशिक्षण सामग्री सदियों तक सुरक्षित रहे। साथ ही भगवान की शिक्षा का प्रमुख साहित्य 'तिपिटक' यानी, इसका परियत्ति-पक्ष (Theoretical aspect) जो भारत से लुप्त हो चुका था, वह भी पुनः प्रकाशित हो। इसके लिए 'विपश्यना विशोधन विन्यास' के नाम से एक शोध संस्थान गठित हो। आने वाले युगों में बुद्ध की शिक्षा के पुनर्जागरण से संबंधित सारा साहित्य इसके पास सुरक्षित ही नहीं रहे, बल्कि आज और आगे भी सदियों तक इसका उपयोग और अनुसंधान भी होता रहे। इस विशोधन के लिए शोध करने वाले भिन्न-भिन्न मर्मज्ञ समय-समय पर सेवा में लगते रहेंगे। यानी, इस विशोधन-कार्य में गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा बिल्कुल नहीं रहेगी। इसीलिए जब इसका ट्रस्ट-डीड बने तब इस विशोधन संस्था के लिए मेरे द्वारा एक योग्य उत्तराधिकारी बनाने का प्रावधान रखा जाय।

मेरे मन में दूसरा विचार यह उठा कि भगवान बुद्ध की पावन धातुओं का सही सम्मान तभी होगा जब कि वे भगवान के मार्गदर्शन के अनुसार किसी भव्य स्तूप में सन्निधानित की जायेंगी। यह भव्य स्तूप भी ब्रह्मदेश की स्थापत्यकला के आधार पर ही बने। यह इसलिए कि ब्रह्मदेश ने सम्राट अशोक से प्राप्त हुई परियत्ति, यानी, बुद्ध-वाणी और पटिपत्ति, यानी, विपश्यना को गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा से पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी दो हजार वर्षों तक शुद्ध रूप में कायम रखा। तभी ये दोनों हमें प्राप्त हुईं। जैसे बर्मा के लोगों ने भारत का उपकार माना, क्योंकि यहीं से उन्हें शुद्ध धर्म प्राप्त हुआ; साथ-साथ सम्राट अशोक का भी उपकार माना, जिसके प्रयास से उन्हें धर्म प्राप्त हुआ। इसी प्रकार आज भारत के लोग भी बर्मा का उपकार मानें, और साथ-साथ सयाजी ऊ बा खिन का भी उपकार मानें, जिन्होंने कि बर्मा का कर्ज चुकाने के लिए मुझे पूरी तरह से प्रशिक्षित करके भारत भेजा। इन दोनों के उपकारों की पावन स्मृतियां दीर्घकाल तक बनी रहें, इस निमित्त मेरे मन में एक भव्य स्तूप - विश्व विपश्यना पगोडा के निर्माण की योजना जागी। यह विश्वभर के बुद्धानुयायियों, विशेष करके विपश्यी साधकों को आह्वान करने के लिए एक आकर्षक प्रकाश स्तंभ होगा। इसके लिए 'ग्लोबल विपश्यना फाउंडेशन' का गठन किया जायगा और यह ध्यान रखा जायगा कि इस पगोडा की बनावट बर्मी स्थापत्य एवं वास्तुकला के अनुसार हो ताकि आज ही नहीं, भविष्य में भी लोगों को बर्मा तथा सयाजी ऊ बा खिन के उपकारों की याद आती रहे।

मेरी इस कल्पना के अनुसार पगोडा का निर्माण हुआ जिसमें भारत तथा पड़ोसी देशों के विपश्यी साधकों तथा अन्यान्य बुद्धभक्तों ने श्रद्धापूर्वक दान दिया। किसी ने भी यह सोच कर दान नहीं दिया कि मैं पगोडा का ट्रस्टी बन जाऊंगा अथवा इसका अध्यक्ष बन जाऊंगा अथवा गुरुजी के न रहने पर मालिक बन जाऊंगा। इन दानियों में मुझे एक सर्वश्रेष्ठ दान की याद आती रहती है जिसने मेरी आंखों को सजल बनाया। पगोडा के उद्घाटन समारोह में इसके मुख्य कक्ष (डोम) में दान के लिए एक छोटा-सा कलश रखा गया था। मैंने देखा कि सिर पर उठाकर घर-घर साग-सब्जी बेच कर गुजारा करने वाली डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर की अनुयायिनी एक महिला ने जब देखा कि भगवान बुद्ध के नाम पर इतना विशाल पगोडा बन रहा है, तब उसने अपनी साड़ी के पल्ले से खोल कर कुछ सिक्के निकाल कर श्रद्धापूर्वक दान-पात्र में डाले, जिनकी खनकती

आवाज ने मुझे भावविभोर बना दिया। उस गरीब महिला का दान कितना सात्त्विक और मूल्यवान था! करोड़ों का दान देने वालों के सामने अधिक सुफलदायी था । वह कुछ ऐसे दान देने वालों की भांति कैसे सोचती कि मैं कभी इस पगोडा की ट्रस्टी या अध्यक्ष बन जाऊंगी या आगे जाकर इसकी मालकिन बन जाऊंगी? बिना कुछ पाने की भावना के साथ दिया गया उस गरीब महिला का यह शुद्ध दान सचमुच इतिहास में याद रखने योग्य होगा। बिना बदले में कुछ पाने की भावना से दिया गया दान ही दान है, नहीं तो व्यवसाय है।

इस पगोडा के परिसर में भगवान बुद्ध के जीवनकाल की एक चित्र-प्रदर्शनी बनी, जिसे बनाने में बर्मा के प्रमुख कलाकार बुलाये गये। ऐसा हो जाने पर इस चित्रकला, वास्तुकला तथा पगोडा की भव्य विशेषता को कायम रखने के लिए जो ट्रस्ट-डीड बना उसमें मेरे द्वारा उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करने का प्रावधान रखा। इस उत्तराधिकार का एक व्यक्ति विशेष रूप से बर्मी कला तथा पगोडा की बर्मी स्थापत्यकला की देखभाल के लिए जिम्मेदार होगा और दूसरे चार विपश्यना के आचार्य होंगे जो कि विशाल ध्यानकक्ष तथा पगोडा-परिसर में कहीं कोई धर्मविरुद्ध कार्य न हो जाय, इसकी देखभाल करेंगे। अतः इस ट्रस्ट में एक की जगह पांच उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करके मैंने ट्रस्ट के मूल प्रावधान को आवश्यकतानुसार निभाया।

तीसरी आवश्यकता यह महसूस हुई कि इस पगोडा के रख-रखाव, अन्यान्य स्मृति-चिह्न और बर्मी वास्तुकला की मरम्मत आदि के लिए के लिए आवश्यक धन की पूर्ति हेतु 'सम्यक वाणिज्य चैरिटेबल ट्रस्ट' का गठन किया जाय। यहां भी गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा का कोई नियम नहीं होने के कारण मेरे द्वारा एक उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करने का प्रावधान रखा गया। यानी, विपश्यना के प्रशिक्षण केंद्रों से अलग केवल इन तीन उपरोक्त प्रतिष्ठानों में ही मेरे द्वारा उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करने का प्रावधान है।

ये तीनों संस्थाएं मेरे अपने स्वप्नों की उपज हैं। इन तीनों संस्थानों का गठन भिन्न-भिन्न उद्देश्यों से हुआ है। इन तीनों संस्थाओं को मेरे बाद भी चिर-काल तक स्थायी रखना आवश्यक मानता हूं। इसीलिए इन तीनों में उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करने का प्रावधान रखा गया है। अतः इनमें अब जो उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त किये जायेंगे, वे अपने बाद अन्य योग्य व्यक्तियों को अपनी-अपनी जिम्मेदारी के कार्यों को करते रहने के लिए नियुक्त करेंगे; ताकि ये तीनों कार्य पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी सुचारुरूप से चलते रहें।

जहां तक गुरुदेव सयाजी ऊ बा खिन द्वारा भारत का कर्ज चुकाने का प्रश्न था, उसके लिए विपश्यना केंद्रों का गठन इसी प्रकार से हुआ, जिनमें पुरातन काल से चली आ रही गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा को ही आधार बनाया गया है। क्योंकि जो लोगों को धर्म सिखाता है और उनमें धर्म जगाता है वही विपश्यना के प्रशिक्षण केंद्र का उत्तराधिकारी होता है। यहां जो भी आचार्य आज सुनिश्चित हैं या भविष्य में होंगे, वे सब उत्तराधिकारी का ही कार्य करेंगे। इसी कारण इन विपश्यना केंद्रों के गठन में किसी प्रशिक्षित आचार्य को छोड़ कर अन्य किसी को उत्तराधिकारी नहीं बनाया जा सकता। क्योंकि जितने भी विपश्यना केंद्र हैं उनके लिए तो प्रशिक्षक आचार्य उत्तराधिकारी होंगे ही, उनके बाद भी जो-जो आचार्य होंगे, वे सब गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा के आधार पर उत्तराधिकारी ही होंगे। इसी कारण इनके ट्रस्ट-डीडों में मेरे द्वारा किसी उत्तराधिकारी की नियुक्ति का वर्णन आवश्यक नहीं समझा गया। परंतु उपरोक्त तीन संस्थान जो कि विपश्यना के प्रशिक्षण के लिए नहीं हैं, उनमें मेरे द्वारा विशेष रूप से उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त करने का प्रावधान अवश्य रखा गया।

यह बात फिर दुहरा दूं और सब को खूब समझ लेनी चाहिए कि धर्म के क्षेत्र पर किसी की मल्कियत नहीं होती -- न उत्तराधिकारियों की, न ट्रस्टियों की, न दान-दाताओं की, न शासनाधिकारियों की। सबको मात्र अपने-अपने जिम्मे का काम करने का अधिकार है। धर्म का सारा कार्य बहुत शांतिपूर्वक चलना चाहिए। किसी के मन में कोई मिथ्या संदेह हो अथवा भ्रांति हो तो मुझसे मिल कर उसे दूर कर ले । मंगल भावनाओं के साथ धर्म का कार्य चलता रहे, इसी में सबका कल्याण है।

When a father has one or more children, they are all his successors and inherit his wealth, riches and property, which they either multiply or squander. 

But this does not happen in the field of Dhamma. All the people who learned Vipassana from the Buddha and spread it became his successors. These succeeding teachers taught Vipassana to others, helped them attain proficiency in it and made them their own successors. In this way, from generation to generation, in the teacher - pupil tradition, all these successors taught Dhamma. At the time of the Emperor Ashoka, Bhikkhu Sona and Bhikkhu Uttara too became successors of the Buddha after learning Dhamma. As successors, they went to Myanmar to teach Dhamma. Apart from teaching to the general people they also trained such disciples, who as successors of the Buddha maintained the teacher - pupil tradition. 

The Buddha never appointed his son Rahula as his successor. Guru Nanakadevaji [founder of Sikhism] proclaimed his disciple Angad Deva as his successor, not his own son. A successor in Dhamma is one who, having learnt how to teach Dhamma from one's own teacher, starts teaching others. This teacher - pupil tradition has been continuing for the last 2500 years and will continue in the future also. 

I learned Vipassana meditation i.e. Pure Dhamma from Sayagyi U BA Khin and to fulfill his ardent desire, I came to India and started teaching Dhamma. While living in Rangoon, I was in close contact with him for 14 years and, on innumerable occasions, I heard him say... .

"We have received this priceless jewel from India in the form of Vipassana. But, today, India has lost it and become bankrupt. We need to repay this debt to India, but who can repay it? I will have to repay it." He was to come to India to repay this invaluable debt himself.

He wanted to come to India to revive Vipassana but in those days, Burmese citizens were issued passports for two reasons only – either to leave Burma forever or f they were offered employment abroad. Sayagyi U Ba Khin neither wanted to leave Burma forever nor wanted to pretend to have got a job in order to come to India. Thus the government did not issue him a passport and he could not come. However, I got a Burmese passport for a very special reason. My mother had become mentally ill in Bombay [Mumbai] and I was aware that if she could practice Vipassana, she would recover. I had two close friends in the Burmese cabinet who strongly supported me so I received my passport for this special reason.

Sayagyi was very happy to know this. He said, "I am unable to repay the debt to India myself, so now you have to accomplish this work on my behalf."

After attaining full expertise in Vipassana teaching under his guidance, I came to India and applied myself to fulfilling his objective. Therefore, in the sphere of Dhamma and the teacher - pupil tradition, I became a successor to Gurudeva Sayagyi U Ba Khin. After teaching Vipassana meditation to many people in India, I appointed some of them as Teachers. Those appointed became my successors in turn by teaching Vipassana to others. In this way, seeing the realisation of Sayagyi's dreams, I was relieved of the burden in my mind and the work of repaying the debt that Burma owed to India began.

After some time, Vipassana centres were gradually established not only in India, but also in many other countries of the world and they continue to get established even now. Wherever centres were established, the Teachers imparting training there are my successors. This is because they are spreading Vipassana as taught to them by me.

As Vipassana Centres got established in several far-flung places, and their number is increasing, so I decided that there should be an individual Centre Teacher as successor for each respective local Vipassana centre, and, wherever necessary, Area Teachers also be appointed to provide guidance to them, Wherever many Area Teachers are working, as per requirement there may be Regional Teachers for each of the bigger geographical region. All Centre Teachers, Area Teachers and Regional Teachers, on their appointment, shall be considered as my successors. I shall publish their names shortly. 

Becoming the successors of a centre or an area or a region, however, does not mean that they become the owners of those centres or areas or regions. All such teachers are successors only in terms of teaching vipassana.

Similarly, the trustees managing the centres do not have any right of succession either. In any of the centres they have no right to get any honour or prestigious position. All of them are Dhamma Servers and they serve the centre as per requirement. When any person donates a land for the Dhamma Centre or anyone constructs any building there, he/she does not have any ownership over the donated land or the building constructed there. Dhamma is its real owner, not the donor. For their respective donations and services they benefit by way of earning invaluable merits and that is all. 

For example, during the time of the Buddha, Anathpindika donated a piece of land to the Buddha, which he had bought by spreading gold coins on it. He constructed residential quarters on it, by investing a large sum of money. Anathpindika understood the Dhamma tradition very well that although he had bought the land and constructed residential quarters here he possessed no right over the donated land or on the buildings constructed there. Whatever was donated was given forever. The intention of expecting something in exchange is indeed very unwholesome. He was sad to observe that after the rainy season, when the Buddha along with his monks went away to the centres of other regions, the centre there became totally deserted. The crowd, which gathered during the presence of the Buddha, was no longer there. Therefore it was his strong desire that even in the absence of the Buddha, the place remained full of people. For this reason, he wanted to construct a temple of the Buddha there. But in spite of his strong desire, he could not do this, because, now he had no right over the donated land. Therefore, to fulfil his desire, he went to the Buddha and requested him to accord permission for the construction of a temple there. If he had any ownership of the donated land, then where was the need for him to seek permission from the Buddha? The Buddha did not grant him permission because he did not want that the place of Dhamma be used for offering prayers and worshipping or for gathering crowds. It is meant for meditation. Therefore the Buddha got a branch of the Bodhi tree planted and said, "People will meditate underneath it after it grows. In this way, the people will be benefited by this land in the right manner." 

Similarly, in the present time also, the individuals who donate land or money for the construction of centres should understand the very old tradition that they cannot have any right over whatever has been given as donation. The Dhamma will keep growing properly only if its pure tradition is maintained. The centre will be used forever from generation to generation for teaching vipassana and Dhamma only. The Teachers of the Centre will change from time to time, but the work of teaching Dhamma will always continue. 

After the establishment of many Vipassana centres, some important thoughts came to my mind, which had no connection at all with the teaching of Vipassana. One important thought was to know how the pure teaching of the Buddha was completely lost in India. Research should be carried out on this topic and now that Vipassana has again revived in India and in the world, the complete training material of teaching this technique should be resurrected and protected for centuries. Simultaneously, the original literature of the teachings of the Buddha called 'Tipitaka' which contains its theoretical aspect, which was lost in India should also be published again. For this purpose– 'Vipassana Research Institute' was established so that not only today but also in the coming centuries it should be preserved and be utilised for further research. Many scholars with profound knowledge in different fields will be engaged here from time to time for research work in this field. So, there will not be any teacher-pupil tradition in this research work. Therefore, when its Trust Deed is prepared, a provision be made for me to appoint a suitable person as a successor.

The second thought that came to my mind was that the pure relics of the Buddha would be rightly honoured only when they are enshrined in a pagoda as per the instructions of the Buddha. Also, this pagoda should be constructed in accordance with the architectural traditions of Myanmar. This is because Myanmar preserved the Pariyatti [the Buddha's teachings] and Patipatti [Vipassana] received from the Emperor Ashoka in pristine purity through the teacher -pupil tradition for two thousand years. For just that reason we could receive both. Just as the people of Myanmar feel grateful to India for receiving the pure Dhamma and also feel grateful to the Emperor Asoka for having received the Dhamma owing to his efforts, in the same way now, people of India should have a feeling of gratitude towards Myanmar and also towards Sayagyi U BA Khin, who, after training me consummately, sent me to India to repay the debt owed by Burma. With a volition that sacred memories of gratitude towards these two are preserved for a long period of time in the future, a thought to construct a magnificent pagoda called "Global Vipassana Pagoda" arose in my mind. This monument shall be an attractive lighthouse to beckon the world-wide followers of the Buddha in general and all the Vipassana meditators in particular. For this purpose, the 'Global Vipassana Foundation' was formed to ensure that the design and structure of the Pagoda are patterned after the Burmese architecture so as to reinforce the memories of gratitude towards the people of Myanmar and Sayagyi U Ba Khin not only in the present but also in the future. 

The Global Vipassana Pagoda was built in accordance with my conception of it. For constructing it donations were given by grateful Vipassana meditators in India & neighbouring countries as also by numerous other devoted followers of the Buddha. None of them gave donations with a view to becoming a trustee or a president or becoming an owner of the Pagoda when I am no more. Of all the people who donated for this Pagoda, I particularly cherish most the memory of one whose generosity made my eyes wet. On the day of the inauguration ceremony of the Pagoda a small donation box was kept in the main dome. I saw a woman, a follower of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar who earned her living by selling vegetables from door to door becoming so sentimental to see such a huge Pagoda constructed in the name of the Buddha that she took out some coins from the folds of her saree and put them in the donation box. The tinkling sound of the coins touched my heart. How pure and priceless was her donation! It was more beneficial than the donation given by a very rich man How could she expect like others that in return she could become a trustee or an office bearer or an owner of this Pagoda in future! The pure donation of this poor woman without any expectation in return is indeed a memorable event of historical importance.Giving without expecting anything in return is in fact true donation, otherwise it is a trade.

In the premises of the Pagoda, an Art Gallery depicting the life of the Buddha was made for which prominent artists from Myanmar were invited. After this was accomplished, the Trust Deed that was prepared had a provision for me to appoint successors for preserving these paintings, architecture and magnificent features of the Pagoda. One of these successors will be specifically responsible for looking after the Burmese art and architecture of the Pagoda and four others will be Teachers of Vipassana who will ensure that no anti-Dhamma activities take place in the large meditation hall and on the Pagoda premises. Thus, by appointing five successors instead of one in this trust, I have acted in accordance with the fundamental provisions of the Trust as per its need.

Thirdly, a need was felt for making available necessary funds for the maintenance and upkeep of the Pagoda & repairs of Mementos and Burmese architectures and therefore 'Samyak Vanijya Charitable Trust' was constituted. Here also, as the teacher - pupil tradition is not relevant, a provision for the appointment of one successor by me has been made.

In other words, only in the aforesaid three institutions there is a provision for me to appoint successors and not in training centres of Vipassana 

All these three institutions are the products of my dreams. They have been established for different purposes. I consider it necessary to maintain them long after me, for posterity. Therefore, a provision has been made in their trust deeds for me to appoint successors in them. Therefore, the successors who will now be appointed by me will appoint other competent persons after them so that these three continue to function satisfactorily and smoothly from generation to generation.

As far as the question of repaying the debt to India was concerned, Vipassana centres have been constituted after the teacher - pupil tradition, which has been prevalent since ancient times. In this tradition, the person who teaches Dhamma and helps it arise in others, is the right successor of the Vipassana Training Centre. The Teachers, who have been appointed today or will be appointed in future will work as successors. For this reason, in the constitution of these Vipassana centres, it is mentioned that no other person can be appointed as successor other than the trained teachers. In all the Vipassana centres, only the trained teachers will be successors and in future they will appoint their successors in accordance with the ancient teacher - pupil tradition. For this reason, there is no provision made for me to appoint successors in the Trust Deeds of these centres. But, in the trust deeds of the three institutions mentioned above a special provision has been made for me to appoint successors because they are not vipassana training centres.

I reiterate and everyone should understand clearly that there is no ownership of anybody in the field of Dhamma; neither of successors, nor of trustees, nor of donors, nor of administrators. Everyone only has the right to perform one's share of duties and take care of the responsibilities. 

All activities of Dhamma should be carried out peacefully. If one has any doubt or confusion he should meet me and discuss with me to remove it. May Dhamma activities go on with goodwill and happiness! This will be for the good and happiness of all.

सन 1995 में एक साधिका के थायराइड कैंसर के दो ऑपरेशन किए गए, ठीक हो गई पर भय मुक्त नहीं हो पा रही थी, क्योंकि सुन रखा था कि यह रोग हो गया तो बार-बार उभरते रहता है ,कहीं वापस हो गया तो क्या होगा, उस समय पूज्य गुरु जी ने उसे जो मार्गदर्शन दिया उनका पालन करके विपश्यना की यह आचार्य आज भी लोगों को धर्म दान दे रही हैं। उस बातचीत को उसके पति ने रिकॉर्ड किया था और टंकी त करवाकर भिजवाया है जिसे साधकों के लाभार्थ यहां प्रश्न उत्तर के रूप में प्रकाशित कर रहे हैं।

🌷 साधिका- मेरा दो बार कैंसर का ऑपरेशन हुआ है गुरुजी?

पूज्य गुरु जी -बेटी कैंसर हो गया तो क्या हुआ ।उसका सामना करना है।

साधिका - गुरु जी ,बहुत डर लग रहा है मैं जानती हूं कि ऐसा नहीं करना चाहिए?

गुरुजी- क्योंकि अंदर से समझ नहीं आई।अंदर से समझने के लिए जब भी चिंता आए ,भय आए  तब उस समय देख 'अच्छा मेरे मन में भय आया है 'अब देखें क्या संवेदना है? उस वक्त कहीं भी शरीर में जो संवेदना हुई वह भय के साथ जुड़ी हुई है, उस संवेदना को देखना है। यद्यपि मन का एक हिस्सा भय में लिप्त हो रहा है, न जाने क्या हो जाएगा क्या हो जाएगा, परंतु मन का एक हिस्सा उस संवेदना को देख रहा है ,भले 5% ही हो बाकी 95% रोल कर रहा है ।लेकिन वह 5% इतना बलवान है कि जड़े काट देगा। और यदि 100% रोल करेगा तब तो बढ़ेगा ही ना।

 विपस्सना से हमें इतना तो सीखना होता है कि हम अपने मानस का एक हिस्सा ऐसा बलवान बनाएं जो साक्षी भाव से देख रहा है ।अच्छा भाई हमें यह रोग है,और इस रोग का न जाने क्या परिणाम होगा ,इस चिंता को भी देख रहे हैं।यह चिंता आई तो उस समय संवेदना क्या है। संवेदना भी देख रहे हैं और यह चिंता है इसे भी देख रहे हैं ।यह संवेदना है, यह चिंता है, हम उसे बार-बार देखते हैं, यह भी जानते हैं कि संवेदना तो बदलती रहने वाली है ,सदा रहने वाली नहीं है। चिंता भी बदलने वाली है , देखते गए तो उसकी ताकत कम होते होते सारी चिंता निकल जाती है। यही तरीका है ,ऐसा नहीं हो और हम केवल बुद्धि से समझते रहे कि हमें चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए तो ऐसा तो सारी दुनिया कहती है और करती है ,तब विपस्सना करने में और दुनिया के कहने में क्या फर्क हुआ।

🌹 साधिका- वही हो रहा है गुरु जी

गुरुजी- तो इसको समझना चाहिए ना बेटी ,हमें तो बताया गया कि तुम्हें रोग हो गया था वह निकल गया अब क्यों चिंता करती हो। चिंता के बाहर निकलने के लिए विपश्यना कि इतनी बड़ी विद्या मिली है ,जब ऐसा होने लगे तब देखो कि इस समय क्या संवेदना है।

 संवेदना तो 24 घंटे होगी ऐसा हो नहीं सकता कि संवेदना नही हो, यह भी जरूरी नहीं कि सिर से पांव तक जाओ ,जहां संवेदना हुई साफ-साफ मालूम हुआ उसको देख रहे हैं ,अच्छा यह अनित्य है, चिंता का विषय आया यह भी अनित्य है ,जैसी भी हो कुछ लेनदेन नहीं ।

क्योंकि मन और शरीर का इतना बड़ा संबंध है उस वक्त मन में कोई बात जोर से उठी है वह शरीर में संवेदना के साथ जुड़ जाएगी ,शरीर में जो संवेदना है वह मन के साथ जुड़ी हुई है। उस समय मन में जो घटना घट रही है वह शरीर के साथ जुड़ गई और उसको हम देख नहीं सकते इतनी ताकत अभी आई नहीं कि हम चिंता को चिंता की तरह देख सके कि देख यह चिंता है। नहीं देख सकते क्योंकि आसान बात नहीं। ऐसे ही भय है, हम उसे नहीं देख पाते। तो भय  है इसे स्वीकार कर लिया और 95% हमारा मन उसमें में रोल कर रहा है लेकिन 5% मन ऐसा है जो संवेदना को देखेगा, भले थोड़ी देर सही । यों देखते रहो संवेदना को और यह भी देखते रहो कि यह अनित्य है। जो भय आया है यह भी अनित्य है। अब देखेंगे कितनी देर रहता है। यों उसकी ताकत कम होते होते निकल जायेगा।

बहुत बार स्पष्ट दिखता है कि हम पर संकट आने वाला है ।बाहर कोई घटना ऐसी घटने वाली है जिससे हमारी कोई चीज नष्ट होने वाली है। भय जागा, न जाने क्या हो जाएगा? वह घटना तो पीछे घटेगी, मन में घबराहट पहले आ गई। ऐसे में हम जो बीज डालेंगे, बीज डालते ही एक तरह की संवेदना होगी। बीज का फल भी पीछे आएगा पर संवेदना पहले होगी ।फिर फल आएगा ।यह प्रकृति का नियम है ।बीज भी संवेदना के साथ, फल भी संवेदना के साथ। तो जब संवेदना आयी, फल आने में अभी देर है, परंतु संवेदना आ गई और हमने उसे देखना शुरू कर दिया तो उसकी ताकत कम होते होते वह फल आएगा भी तो फूल की छड़ी की तरह हल्का होकर आएगा। उसकी ताकत कम हो गई। यों समता से देख कर उसकी ताकत कम कर दी। आम आदमी क्या करता है, उस बेचारे को होश नहीं है तो जैसे हम कर रहे थे, चिंता ही करता है- हमारा क्या हो जाएगा, हमारा क्या हो जाएगा? उसका जो फल आने वाला है उसको और मजबूत बना देगा, बढ़ा देगा उसको बढ़ाने का काम कर रहे हो भाई ।भला चाहते हुए भी बुरा कर रहे हैं ,उल्टी बात हो गई ना।       क्रमश.........

प्रश्न: गुरुजी मुझे डिप्रेशन है और मै हमेशा व्याकुल रहती हूं।मुझे क्या करना चाहिए?

उत्तर: विपश्यना डिप्रेशन का अपूर्व इलाज है।

किसी शिविर में शामिल होकर अपने शरीर पर होने वाली संवेदनाओं को समता भाव से अनुभव करना सीख लो।डिप्रेशन दूर करने की औषधि मिल जाएगी।

जब डिप्रेशन आए तो स्वीकार करो कि मेरे मन में डिप्रेशन है।और अवश्य ही मनोचिकित्सक के मार्गदर्शन में रहो।यह बहुत जरूरी होता है।

साथ साथ किस बात को लेकर डिप्रेशन है उसे दूर करके केवल डिप्रेशन को स्वीकार करते हुए उस समय जो भी शारीरिक संवेदना महसूस हो रही है उन्हे तटस्थ भाव से देखने लगें,तो इस डिप्रेशन और उससे संबंधित संवेदनाओं को अनित्य भाव पर आधारित समता से देखते देखते डिप्रेशन दुर्बल होता जाएगा,और समय पाकर समाप्त हो जाएगा।

परंतु इस विद्या को किसी दस दिन के शिविर में भलीभांति सीख कर ही इसका प्रयोग करना चाहिए।

एक बात का ख्याल रखना चाहिए कि डिप्रेशन जैसे दर्दों में मनोचिकित्सक की सलाह और मार्गदर्शन अवश्य ही लेना चाहिए।

Working one day after the other, we have come to the closing day of this Dhamma seminar. When you started the work, you were asked to surrender completely to the technique and discipline of the course. Without this surrender, you could not have given a fair trial to the technique. Now ten days are over; you are your own master. When you return to your home, you will review calmly what you have done here. If you find that what you have learned here is practical, logical, and beneficial to yourself and to all others, then you should accept it—not because someone has asked you to do so, but with a free will, of your own accord; not just for ten days, but for your whole life.

The acceptance must be not merely at the intellectual or emotional level. One has to accept Dhamma at the actual level by applying it, making it a part of one’s life, because only the actual practice of Dhamma will give tangible benefits in daily life.

You joined this course to learn how to practice Dhamma—how to live a life of morality, of mastery over one’s mind, of purity of mind. Every evening, Dhamma talks were given merely to clarify the practice. It is necessary to understand what one is doing and why, so that one will not become confused or work in a wrong way. However, in the explanation of the practice, certain aspects of the theory inevitably were mentioned, and since different people from different backgrounds come to a course, it is quite possible that some may have found part of the theory unacceptable. If so, never mind, leave it aside. More important is the practice of Dhamma. No one can object to living a life that does not harm others, to developing control of one’s mind, to freeing the mind of defilements and generating love and good will. The practice is universally acceptable, and this is the most significant aspect of Dhamma, because whatever benefit one gets will be not from theories but from practice, from applying Dhamma in one’s life.

In ten days one can get only a rough outline of the technique; one cannot expect to become perfect in it so quickly. But even this brief experience should not be undervalued: you have taken the first step, a very important step, although the journey is long—indeed, it is a lifetime job.

A seed of Dhamma has been sown, and has started sprouting into a plant. A good gardener takes special care of a young plant, and because of the service given it, that little plant gradually grows into a huge tree with thick trunk and deep roots. Then, instead of requiring service, it keeps giving, serving, for the rest of its life.

This little plant of Dhamma requires service now. Protect it from the criticism of others by making a distinction between the theory, to which some might object, and the practice, which is acceptable to all. Don’t allow such criticism to stop your practice. Meditate one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening. This regular, daily practice is essential. At first it may seem a heavy burden to devote two hours a day to meditation, but you will soon find that much time will be saved that was wasted in the past. Firstly, you will need less time for sleep. Secondly, you will be able to complete your work more quickly, because your capacity for work will increase. When a problem arises you will remain balanced, and will be able immediately to find the correct solution. As you become established in the technique, you will find that having meditated in the morning, you are full of energy throughout the day, without any agitation.

When you go to bed at night, for five minutes be aware of sensations anywhere in the body before you fall asleep. Next morning, as soon as you wake up, again observe sensations within for five minutes. These few minutes of meditation immediately before falling asleep and after waking up will prove very helpful.

If you live in an area where there are other Vipassana meditators, once a week meditate together for an hour. And once a year, a ten-day retreat is a must. Daily practice will enable you to maintain what you have achieved here, but a retreat is essential in order to go deeper; there is still a long way to go. If you can come to an organized course like this, very good. If not, you can still have a retreat by yourself. Do a self-course for ten days, wherever you can be secluded from others, and where someone can prepare your meals for you. You know the technique, the timetable, the discipline; you have to impose all that on yourself now. If you wish to inform your teacher in advance that you are starting a self course, I shall remember you and send my mettā, vibrations of good will; this will help to establish a healthy atmosphere in which you can work better. However, if you have not informed your teacher, you should not feel weak. Dhamma itself will protect you. Gradually you must reach a stage of self-dependence. The teacher is only a guide; you have to be your own master. Depending on anyone, all the time, is no liberation.

Daily meditation of two hours and yearly retreats of ten days are only the minimum necessary to maintain the practice. If you have more free time, you should use it for meditation. You may do short courses of a week, or a few days, even one day. In such short courses, devote the first one third of your time to the practice of anapana, and the rest to Vipassana.

In your daily meditation, use most of the time for the practice of Vipassana. Only if your mind is agitated or dull, if for any reason it is difficult to observe sensations and maintain equanimity, then practice Anapana for as long as necessary.

When practicing Vipassana, be careful not to play the game of sensations, becoming elated with pleasant ones and depressed with unpleasant ones. Observe every sensation objectively. Keep moving your attention systematically throughout the body, not allowing it to remain on one part for long periods. A maximum of two minutes is enough in any part, or up to five minutes in rare cases, but never more than that. Keep the attention moving to maintain awareness of sensation in every part of the body. If the practice starts to become mechanical, change the way in which you move your attention. In every situation remain aware and equanimous, and you will experience the wonderful benefits of Vipassana.

In active life as well you must apply the technique, not only when you sit with eyes closed. When you are working, all attention should be on your work; consider it as your meditation at this time. But if there is spare time, even for five or ten minutes, spend it in awareness of sensations; when you start work again, you will feel refreshed. Be careful, however, that when you meditate in public, in the presence of non-meditators, you keep your eyes open; never make a show of the practice of Dhamma.

If you practice Vipassana properly, a change must come for better in your life. You should check your progress on the path by checking your conduct in daily situations, in your behavior and dealings with other people. Instead of harming others, have you started helping them? When unwanted situations occur, do you remain balanced? If negativity starts in the mind, how quickly are you aware of it? How quickly are you aware of the sensations that arise along with the negativity? How quickly do you start observing the sensations? How quickly do you regain a mental balance, and start generating love and compassion? In this way examine yourself, and keep progressing on the path.

Whatever you have attained here, not only preserve it, but make it grow. Keep applying Dhamma in your life. Enjoy all the benefits of this technique, and live a happy, peaceful, harmonious life, good for you and for all others.

One word of warning: you are welcome to tell others what you have learned here; there is never any secrecy in Dhamma. But at this stage, do not try to teach the technique. Before doing that, one must be ripened in the practice, and must be trained to teach. Otherwise there is the danger of harming others instead of helping them. If someone you have told about Vipassana wishes to practice it, encourage that person to join an organized course like this, led by a proper guide. For now, keep working to establish yourself in Dhamma. Keep growing in Dhamma, and you will find that by the example of your life, you automatically attract others to the path.

May Dhamma spread around the world, for the good and benefit of many.

May all beings be happy, be peaceful, be liberated!

सभी सुख एवं शांति चाहते हैं, क्यों कि हमारे जीवन में सही सुख एवं शांति नहीं है। 

हम सभी समय समय पर द्वेष, दौर्मनस्य, क्रोध, भय, ईर्ष्या आदि के कारण दुखी होते हैं। और जब हम दुखी होते हैं तब यह दुख अपने तक ही सीमित नहीं रखते। हम औरों को भी दुखी बनाते हैं। जब कोई व्यक्ति दुखी होता है तो आसपास के सारे वातावरण को अप्रसन्न बना देता है, और उसके संपर्क में आने वाले लोगों पर इसका असर होता है। 

सचमुच, यह जीवन जीने का उचित तरिका नहीं है।

हमें चाहिए कि हम भी शांतिपूर्वक जीवन जीएं और औरों के लिए भी शांति का ही निर्माण करें। 

आखिर हम सामाजिक प्राणि हैं, हमें समाज में रहना पडता हैं और समाज के अन्य व्यक्तियों के साथ पारस्पारिक संबंध रखना है। ऐसी स्थिति में हम शांतिपूर्वक जीवन कैसे जी सकते हैं? कैसे हम अपने भीतर सुख एवं शांति का जीवन जीएं, और कैसे हमारे आसपास भी शांति एवं सौमनस्यता का वातावरण बनाए, ताकि समाज के अन्य लोग भी सुख एवं शांति का जीवन जी सके?

हमारे दुख को दूर करने के लिए पहले हम यह जान लें कि हम अशांत और बेचैन क्यों हो जाते हैं। 

गहराई से ध्यान देने पर साफ मालूम होगा कि जब हमारा मन विकारों से विकृत हो उठता है तब वह अशांत हो जाता है। हमारे मन में विकार भी हो और हम सुख एवं सौमनस्यता का अनुभव करें, यह संभव नहीं है।

ये विकार क्यों आते है, कैसे आते है? 

फिर गहराई से ध्यान देने पर साफ मालूम होगा कि जब कोई व्यक्ति हमारे मनचाहा व्यवहार नहीं करता उसके अथवा किसी अनचाही घटना के प्रतिक्रियास्वरूप आते हैं। अनचाही घटना घटती है और हम भीतर तणावग्रस्त हो जाते हैं। मनचाही के न होने पर, मनचाही के होने में कोई बाधा आ जाए तो हम तणावग्रस्त होते हैं। हम भीतर गांठे बांधने लगते है। 

जीवन भर अनचाही घटनाएं होती रहती हैं, मनाचाही कभी होती है, कभी नहीं होती है, और जीवन भर हम प्रतिक्रिया करते रहते हैं, गांठे बांधते रहते हैं। हमारा पूरा शरीर एवं मानस इतना विकारों से, इतना तणाव से भर जाता है कि हम दुखी हो जाते हैं।इस दुख से बचने का एक उपाय यह कि जीवन में कोई अनचाही होने ही न दें, सब कुछ मनचाहा ही हों। या तो हम ऐसी शक्ति जगाए, या और कोई हमारे मददकर्ता के पास ऐसी ताकद होनी चाहिए कि अनचाही होने न दें और सारी मनचाही पूरी हो। लेकिन यह असंभव है। 

विश्व में ऐसा कोई व्यक्ति नहीं है जिसकी सारी ईच्छाएं पूरी होती है, जिसके जीवन में मनचाही ही मनचाही होती है, और अनचाही कभीभी नहीं होती। जीवन में अनचाही होती ही है। 

ऐसे में प्रश्न उठता है, कैसे हम विषम परिस्थितियों के पैदा होने पर अंधप्रतिक्रिया न दें? 

कैसे हम तणावग्रस्त न होकर अपने मन को शांत व संतुलित रख सकें?

भारत एवं भारत के बाहर भी कई ऐसे संत पुरुष हुए जिन्होंने इस समस्या के, मानवी जीवन के दुख की समस्या के, समाधान की खोज की। 

उन्होंने उपाय बताया- जब कोई अनचाही के होने पर मन में क्रोध, भय अथवा कोई अन्य विकार की प्रतिक्रिया आरंभ हो तो जितना जल्द हो सके उतना जल्द अपने मन को किसी और काम में लगा दो। उदाहरण के तौर पर, उठो, एक गिलास पानी लो और पानी पीना शुरू कर दो—आपका गुस्सा बढेगा नहीं, कम हो जायेगा। अथवा गिनती गिननी शुरू कर दो—एक, दो, तीन, चार। अथवा कोई शब्द या मंत्र या जप या जिसके प्रति तुम्हारे मन में श्रद्धा है ऐसे किसी देवता का या संत पुरुष का नाम जपना शुरू कर दो। मन किसी और काम में लग जाएगा और कुछ हद तक तुम विकारों से, क्रोध से मुक्त हो जाओगे।इससे मदद हुई। यह उपाय काम आया। आजभी काम आता है। 

ऐसे लगता है कि मन व्याकुलता से मुक्त हुआ। 

लेकिन यह उपाय केवल मानस के उपरी सतह पर ही काम करता है। वस्तुत: हमने विकारों को अंतर्मन की गहराईयों में दबा दिया, जहां उनका प्रजनन एवं संवर्धन चलता रहा। 

मानस के उपर शांति एवं सौमनस्यता का एक लेप लग गया लेकिन मानस की गहराईयों में दबे हुए विकारों का सुप्त ज्वालामुखी वैसा ही रहा, जो समया पाकर फूट पडेगा ही।

भीतर के सत्य की खोज करने वाले कुछ वैज्ञानिकों ने इसके आगे खोज की। 

अपने मन एवं शरीर के सच्चाई का भीतर अनुभव किया। उन्होंने देखा कि मन को और काम में लगाना यानी समस्या से दूर भागना है। 

पलायन सही उपाय नहीं है, समस्या का सामना करना चाहिए। 

मन में जब विकार जागेगा, तब उसे देखो, उसका सामना करो। जैसे ही आप विकार को देखना शुरू कर दोगे, वह क्षीण होता जाएगा और धीरे धीरे उसका क्षय हो जाएगा।यह अच्छा उपाय है। दमन एवं खुली छूट की दोनो अतियों को टालता है। विकारों को अंतर्मन की गहराईयों में दबाने से उनका निर्मूलन नहीं होगा। और विकारों को अकुशल शारीरिक एवं वाचिक कर्मों द्वारा खुली छूट देना समस्याओं को और बढाना है। 

लेकिन अगर आप केवल देखते रहोगे, तो विकारों का क्षय हो जाएगा और आपको उससे छुटकारा मिलेगा।

कहना तो बड़ा आसान है, लेकिन करना बड़ा कठिन। 

अपने विकारों का सामना करना आसान नहीं है। 

जब क्रोध जागता है, तब इस तरह सिर पर सवार हो जाता है कि हमें पता भी नहीं चलता। क्रोध से अभिभूत होकर हम ऐसे शारीरिक एवं वाचिक काम कर जाते हैं जिससे हमारी भी हानि होती है, औरों की भी। जब क्रोध चला जाता है, तब हम रोते हैं और पछतावा करते हैं, इस या उस व्यक्ति से या भगवान से क्षमायाचना करते हैं— हमसे भूल हो गयी, हमें माफ कर दो। 

लेकिन जब फिर वैसी ही स्थिति का सामना करना पड़ता है तो हम वैसे ही प्रतिक्रिया करते हैं।

 बार-बार पश्चाताप करने से कुछ लाभ नहीं होता।

हमारी कठिनाई यह है कि जब विकार जागता है तब हम होश खो बैठते हैं। विकार का प्रजनन मानस की तलस्पर्शी गहराईयों में होता है और जब तक वह उपरी सतह तक पहुंचता है तो इतना बलवान हो जाता है कि हमपर अभिभूत हो जाता है। हम उसको देख नहीं पाते।

तो कोई प्राईवेट सेक्रेटरी साथ रख लिया जो हमें याद दिलाये, देख मालिक, तुझ में क्रोध आ गया है, तू क्रोध को देख। क्यों कि क्रोध दिन के चौबीस घंटों में कभी भी आ सकता है इसलिए तीन प्राईवेट सेक्रेटरीज् को नौकरी में रख लूं। समझ लो, रख लिए। क्रोध आया और सेक्रेटरी कहता है, देख मालिक, क्रोध आया। तो पहला काम यह करूंगा कि उसे डांट दूंगा। मूर्ख कहीं का, मुझको सिखाता है? मैं क्रोध से इतना अभिभूत हो जाता हूं कि यह सलाह कुछ काम नहीं आती।मान लो मुझे होश आया और मैं ने उसे नहीं डांटा। मैं कहता हूं—बड़ा अच्छा कहा तूने. अब मैं क्रोध का ही दर्शन करूंगा, उसके प्रति साक्षीभाव रखूंगा। 

क्या यह संभव है ? 

जब आंख बंद कर क्रोध देखने का प्रयास करूंगा तब जिस बात को लेकर क्रोध जागा, बार-बार वही बात, वही व्यक्ती, वह ही घटना मन में आयेगी। मैं क्रोध को नहीं, क्रोध के आलंबन को देख रहा हूं। इससे क्रोध और भी ज़ादा बढेगा। यह कोई उपाय नहीं हुआ। आलंबन को काटकर केवल विकार को देखना बिल्कुल आसान नहीं होता।

लेकिन कोई व्यक्ति परम मुक्त अवस्था तक पहुंच जाता है, तो सही उपाय बताता है।

 ऐसा व्यक्ति खोज निकालता है कि जब भी मन में कोई विकार जागे तो शरीर पर दो घटनाएं उसी वक्त शुरू हो जाती हैं। 

1) सांस अपनी नैसर्गिक गति खो देता है। जैसे मन में विकार जागे, सांस तेज एवं अनियमित हो जाता है। यह देखना बड़ा आसान है। 

2)  सूक्ष्म स्तर पर शरीर में एक जीवरासायनिक प्रक्रिया शुरू हो जाती है जिसके परिणामस्वरूप संवेदनाओं का निर्माण होता है। हर विकार शरीर पर कोई न कोई संवेदना निर्माण करता है।यह प्रायोगिक उपाय हुआ। 

एक सामान्य व्यक्ति अमूर्त विकारों को नहीं देख सकता—अमूर्त भय, अमूर्त क्रोध, अमूर्त वासना आदि। लेकिन उचित प्रशिक्षण एवं प्रयास करेगा तो आसानी से सांस एवं शरीर पर होने वाली संवेदनाओं को देख सकता है। दोनों का ही मन के विकारों से सीधा संबंध है।सांस एवं संवेदनाएं दो तरह से मदत करेगी। 

एक, वे प्राईवेट सेक्रेटरी का काम करेंगी। जैसे ही मन में कोई विकार जागा, सांस अपनी स्वाभाविकता खो देगा, वह हमे बतायेगा—देख, कुछ गडबड है! और हम सांस को डांट भी नहीं सकते। हमें उसकी चेतावनी को मानना होगा। ऐसे ही संवेदनाएं हमें बतायेगी कि कुछ गलत हो रहा है। दोन, चेतावनी मिलने के बाद हम सांस एवं संवेदनाओं को देख सकते है। ऐसा करने पर शीघ्र ही हम देखेंगे कि विकार दूर होने लगा।

यह शरीर और मन का परस्पर संबंध एक ही सिक्के के दो पहलू हैं।

 एक तरफ मन में जागने वाले विचार एवं विकार हैं और दूसरी तरफ सांस एवं शरीर पर होने वाली संवेदनाएं हैं। 

मन में कोई भी विचार या विकार जागता है तो तत्क्षण सांस एवं संवेदनाओं को प्रभावित करता ही है।

 इस प्रकार, सांस एवं संवेदनाओं को देख कर हम विकारों को देख रहे हैं। पलायन नहीं कर रहे, विकारों के आमुख होकर सच्चाई का सामना कर रहे हैं। 

शीघ्र ही हम देखेंगे कि ऐसा करने पर विकारों की ताकत कम होने लगी, पहले जैसे वे हमपर अभिभूत नहीं होते। 

हम अभ्यास करते रहें तो उनका सर्वथा निर्मूलन हो जाएगा।

 विकारों से मुक्त होते होते हम सुख एवं शांति का जीवन जीने लग जाएंगे।

इस प्रकार आत्मनिरिक्षण की यह विद्या हमें भीतर और बाहर दोनो सच्चाईयों से अवगत कराती है।

 पहले हम केवल बहिर्मुखी रहते थे और भीतर की सच्चाई को नहीं जान पाते थे। अपने दुख का कारण हमेशा बाहर ढूंढते थे। बाहर की परिस्थितियों को कारण मानकर उन्हें बदलने का प्रयत्न करते थे। 

भीतर की सच्चाई के बारे में अज्ञान के कारण हम यह नहीं समझ पाते थे कि हमारे दुख का कारण भीतर है, वह है सुखद एवं दुखद संवेदनाओं के प्रति अंध प्रतिक्रिया।

अब, अभ्यास के कारण, हम सिक्के का दूसरा पहलू देख सकते हैं। हम सांस को भी जान सकते है और भीतर क्या हो रहा उसको भी। सांस हो या संवेदना, हम उसे मानसिक संतुलन खोये बिना देख सकते हैं। प्रतिक्रिया बंद होती है तो दुख का संवर्धन नहीं होता। उसके बजाय, विकार उभर कर आते हैं और उनकी निर्जरा होती है, क्षय होता है।

जैसे जैसे हम इस विद्या में पकते चले जांय, विकार शीघ्रता के साथ क्षय होने लगते हैं। धीरे धीरे मन विकारों से मुक्त होता है, शुद्ध होता है। 

शुद्ध चित्त हमेशा प्यार से भरा रहता है—सबके प्रति मंगल मैत्री, औरों के अभाव एवं दुखों के प्रति करुणा, औरों के यश एवं सुख के प्रति मुदिता एवं हर स्थिति में समता।जब कोई उस अवस्था पर पहुंचता है तो पूरा जीवन बदल जाता है। 

शरीर एवं वाणी के स्तर पर कोई ऐसा काम कर नहीं पायेगा जिससे की औरों की सुख-शांति भंग हो। उसके बजाय, संतुलित मन शांत हो जाता है और अपने आसपास सुख-शांति का वातावरण निर्माण करता है। अन्य लोग इससे प्रभावित होते हैं, उनकी मदत होने लगती है।जब हम भीतर अनुभव हो रही हर स्थिति में मन संतुलित रखते हैं, तब किसी भी बाह्य परिस्थिति का सामना करते हुए तटस्थ भाव बना रहता है। 

यह तटस्थ भाव पलायनवाद नहीं है, ना यह दुनिया की समस्याओं के प्रति उदासीनता या बेपरवाही है। 

विपश्यना (Vipassana) का नियमित अभ्यास करने वाले औरों के दुखों के प्रति अधिक संवेदनशील होते हैं, एवं उनके दुखों को हटाने के लिए बिना व्याकुल हुए मैत्री, करुणा एवं समता भरे चित्त के साथ हर प्रकार प्रयत्नशील होते हैं। उनमें पवित्र तटस्थता आ जाती हैं—मन का संतुलन खोये बिना कैसे पूर्ण रूप से औरों की मदत के लिए वचनबद्ध होना। इस प्रकार औरों के सुख-शांति के लिए प्रयत्नशील होकर वे स्वयं सुखी एवं शांत रहते हैं।

भगवान बुद्ध ने यही सिखाया—जीवन जीने की कला। 

उन्होंने किसी संप्रदाय की स्थापना नहीं की। उन्होंने अपने शिष्यों को मिथ्या कर्म-कांड नहीं सिखाये। बल्कि, उन्होंने भीतर की नैसर्गिक सच्चाई को देखना सिखाया। हम अज्ञानवश प्रतिक्रिया करते रहते हैं, अपनी हानि करते हैं औरों की भी हानि करते हैं। जब सच्चाई को जैसी-है-वैसी देखने की प्रज्ञा जागृत होती है तो यह अंध प्रतिक्रिया का स्वभाव दूर होता है। तब हम सही क्रिया करते हैं—ऐसा काम जिसका उगम सच्चाई को देखने और समझने वाले संतुलित चित्त में होता है। ऐसा काम सकारात्मक एवं सृजनात्मक होता है, आत्महितकारी एवं परहितकारी।आवश्यक है, खुद को जानना, जो कि हर संत पुरुष की शिक्षा है। केवल कल्पना, विचार या अनुमान के बौद्धिक स्तर पर नहीं, भावुक होकर या भक्तिभाव के कारण नहीं, जो सुना या पढा उसके प्रति अंधमान्यता के कारण नहीं। ऐसा ज्ञान किसी काम का नहीं है। हमें सच्चाई को अनुभव के स्तर पर जानना चाहिए। शरीर एवं मन के परस्पर संबंध का प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव होना चाहिए। इसी से हम दुख से मुक्ति पा सकते हैं।अपने बारे में इस क्षण का जो सत्य है, जैसा भी है उसे ठीक वैसा ही, उसके सही स्वभाव में देखना समझना, यही विपश्यना है। 

भगवान बुद्ध के समय की भारत की जनभाषा में पस्सना (पश्यना / passana) कहते थे देखने को, यह जो खुली आंखों से सामान्य देखना होता है उसको। लेकिन विपस्सना (विपश्यना) का अर्थ है जो चीज जैसी है उसे वैसी उसके सही रूप में देखना, ना कि केवल जैसा उपर उपर से प्रतित होता है। भासमान सत्य के परे जाकर समग्र शरीर एवं मन के बारे में परमार्थ सत्य को जानना आवश्यक है। 

जब हम उस सच्चाई का अनुभव करते हैं तब हमारा अंध प्रतिक्रिया करने का स्वभाव बदल जाता है, विकारों का प्रजनन बंद होता है, और अपने आप पुराने विकारों का निर्मूलन होता है। हम दुखों से छुटकारा पाते हैं एवं सही सुख का अनुभव करने लगते हैं।

विपश्यना साधना के शिविर में दिए जाने वाले प्रशिक्षण के तीन सोपान हैं। 

1) ऐसे शारीरिक एवं वाचिक कर्मों से विरत रहो, जिनसे औरों की सुख-शांति भंग होती हो। विकारों से मुक्ति पाने का अभ्यास हम नहीं कर सकते अगर दूसरी ओर हमारे शारीरिक एवं वाचिक कर्म ऐसे हैं जिससे की विकारों का संवर्धन हो रहा हो। इसलिए, शील की आचार संहिता इस अभ्यास का पहला महत्त्वपूर्ण सोपान है। जीव-हत्या, चोरी, कामसंबंधी मिथ्याचार, असत्य भाषण एवं नशे के सेवन से विरत रहना—इन शीलों का पालन निष्ठापूर्वक करने का निर्धार करते हैं। शील पालन के कारण मन कुछ हद तक शांत हो जाता है और आगे का काम करना संभव होता है।

2)  इस जंगली मन को एक (सांस के) आलंबन पर लगाकर वश में करना। जितना हो सके उतना समय लगातार मन को सांस पर टिकाने अभ्यास करना होता है। यह सांस की कसरत नहीं है, सांस का नियमन नहीं करते। बल्कि, नैसर्गिक सांस को देखना होता है, जैसा है वैसा, जैसे भी भीतर आ रहा हो, जैसे भी बाहर जा रहा हो। इस तरह मन और भी शांत हो जाता है और तीव्र विकारों से अभिभूत नहीं होता। साथ ही साथ, मन एकाग्र हो जाता है, तीक्ष्ण हो जाता है, प्रज्ञा के काम के लायक हो जाता है।शील एवं मन को वश में करने के यह दो सोपान अपने आपमें आवश्यक भी हैं और लाभदायी भी। लेकिन अगर हम तिसरा कदम नहीं उठायेंगे तो विकारों का दमन मात्र हो कर रह जाएगा। 

3)  अपने बारें में सच्चाई को जानकर विकारों का निर्मूलन द्वारा मन की शुद्धता। यह विपश्यना है—संवेदना के रूप में प्रकट होने वाले सतत परिवर्तनशील मन एवं शरीर के परस्पर संबंध को सुव्यवस्थित विधि से एवं समता के साथ देखते हुए अपने बारे में सच्चाई का अनुभव करना। 

यह भगवान बुद्ध की शिक्षा का चरमबिंदु है—आत्मनिरीक्षण द्वारा आत्मशुद्धि।

सभी इसका अभ्यास कर सकते हैं। सभी दुखियारे हैं। इस सार्वजनीन रोग का इलाज भी सार्वजनीन होना चाहिए, सांप्रदायिक नहीं। 

जब कोई क्रोध से पीड़ित होता है तो वह बौद्ध क्रोध, हिंदू क्रोध या ईसाई क्रोध नहीं होता। क्रोध क्रोध है। क्रोध के कारण जो व्याकुलता आती है, उसे ईसाई, यहुदी या मुस्लिम व्याकुलता नहीं कहा जा सकता। रोग सार्वजनीन है। इलाज भी सार्वजनीन होना चाहिए।

विपश्यना ऐसा ही सार्वजनीन उपाय है। 

औरों की सुख-शांति भंग न करने वाले शील के पालन का कोई विरोध नहीं करेगा। मन को वश करने के अभ्यास का कोई विरोध नहीं करेगा। अपने बारें में सच्चाई जानने वाली प्रज्ञा का, जिससे कि मन के विकार दूर होते है, कोई विरोध नहीं करेगा। 

विपश्यना सार्वजनीन विद्या है।भीतर की सच्चाई को देखकर सत्य को जैसा है वैसा देखना—यही अपने आपको प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव से जानना है। धीरजपूर्वक प्रयत्न करते हुए हम विकारों से मुक्ती पाते हैं। 

स्थूल भासमान सत्य से शुरू करके साधक शरीर एवं मन के परमसत्य तक पहुंचता है। फिर उसके भी परे, शरीर एवं मन के परे, समय एवं स्थान के परे, संस्कृत सापेक्ष जगत के परे—विकारों से पूर्ण मुक्ति का सत्य, सभी दुखों से पूर्ण मुक्ति का सत्य। उस परमसत्य को चाहे जो नाम दो, सभी के लिए वह अंतिम लक्ष्य है।

सभी उस परमसत्य का साक्षात्कार करें।

 सभी प्राणी दुखों से मुक्त हों। 

सभी प्राणी शांत हो, सुखी हो।

सबका मंगल हो।
